How to Install a Nest Thermostat

Google Nest thermostat is designed to install yourself. Installation usually takes 30 minutes. While installation of Nest thermostat is easy, many homeowners prefer a Nest Pro to take care of the installation of their new Nest thermostat. If you are having problems installing your new thermostat, or you prefer to have it installed by a pro, contact us and we will take care of the installation.

1. Before Opening the Nest Thermostat Package

Before unboxing your new Nest thermostat, you must make sure that it is compatible with your home’s existing HVAC system. Check all of the wires connected to the current thermostat against the list of available connectors on the Nest thermostat box or use the compatibility checker at http://nest.com/works.

2. Turn off power to the HVAC System

To protect yourself and your HVAC system, find the dedicated circuit breaker for your  furnace, air conditioner or heat pump in your electrical panel and turn them off. If you are not sure which breakers are belongs to your HVAC system, turn the main breaker off.

3. Removing the old thermostat

Remove the cover of the old thermostat, take a picture of the wiring for future reference. Use the wire labels provided with the thermostat and mark the wires connected to the old thermostat. Unscrew the old thermostat and remove the old mounting plate from the wall.

4. Install the Nest Thermostat

Once the old thermostat has been removed, it’s a good time to patch and paint the marks of the old thermostat. Another option is to use the large trim plate that Nest supplies to cover them. Gently guide the wires through the center hole of Nest thermostat. Install the top screw first and level the thermostat using the built-in bubble level to properly align the mounting plate and then install the bottom screw. Avoid over tightening the screws, it can damage the circuitry in the Nest base.

Insert the wires that you removed from the old thermostat and labeled them to the designated places in your new Nest thermostat.

Nest Power Connector

Nest thermostats are designed to work without a common wire or “C” wire. For some HVAC systems, a “C” wire is needed to power the thermostat efficiently. The Nest Power Connector makes it easy to install a Nest thermostat when a “C” wire is needed.

Make sure your system is compatible. Nest Power Connector is only compatible with 24VAC HVAC Systems. Millivolt and high voltage systems are incompatible.

The Nest Power Connector is similar to a “C” wire. It supplies continuous power to your Nest thermostat to prevent low power issues. If you have one thermostat in your home, the Nest Power Connector it installs right on your furnace or air handler. If you have multiple thermostats, it must be installed at the Zone Controller. No new wiring is required. We recommend contacting a Nest pro to install the Nest Power Connector to avoid any damage on your HVAC system and to avoid warranty issues.

* Fan relay (G) is optional. However, without a G wire, Nest will not be able to control the fan independent of heating.
† Common wire (C) not required in most cases, but strongly recommended.
‡ Use Rh or Rc in single transformer systems; no jumper wire required. For dual transformer systems, use Rh for the heating transformer and Rc for the cooling transformer.
