What is a Storage Tank Water Heater and how do they work?

Conventional storage tank heaters are one of the most common types of water heaters in Canadian homes. Residential water heaters consist of a tank which can contain between 30 or 60 gallons of water. The water heater uses combustion (in gas or oil fueled units) or electricity (in an electrical tank water heater) to heat up the whole volume of water and keep it warm and ready to use.

A knowledgeable water heater specialist can help you to calculate the daily amount of your house hot water demand and help you to choose the right size with the right capacity of water heater to ensure your tank water heater works efficiently, reduces your energy bills while keeping up with your home’s hot water demand.

Types of Storage tank water heater?

Based on how they are powered, there are three types of tank water heaters mostly used in Toronto and GTA, gas storage tank water heaters, electrical water heaters, and hybrid (heat pump/electric) tank water heaters.

With a variety of choices of storage tank water heaters available in the market with different efficiency and features, it’s often overwhelming to find the right option for your hot water demand and lifestyle. Contact us today and we’ll be happy to help you make an informed decision to choose the best options that suit your needs and budget.

Gas-fueled Tank Water Heaters

For homes having natural gas pipelines, gas-fueled water heaters are an affordable and efficient option to generate domestic hot water. Gas-fueled tank water heaters burning natural or propane gas and the process called combustion. Combustion creates heat to heat up water as well as exhaust gasses containing highly poisonous carbon monoxide. Depending on the type of the storage tank water heater venting system, a metal or plastic pipe called flue or chimney, venting the exhaust gasses out of the house.

There are three types of ventilation systems in storage tank water heaters. Atmospheric vent, Power vent and direct vent.

Atmospheric Vent

Gas-fueled tank water heaters with Atmospheric type of vent are the most common type of residential tank water heaters. In this type of gas water heater, exhaust gasses naturally leave the house using a vertical or sloping vent. Because of the buoyancy of the hot gasses, they rise and safely exit the home, and the air required for combustion draws from the surrounding area around the storage water heater (in the basement or garage).

Power Vent

Power vent gas water heaters come with an electric blower fan which is installed on top of the tank water heater to force the exhaust gasses through the flue to the outside of the house. The vent for this type of water heater can be installed vertically or horizontally which provides more flexibility for the location of the water heater installation at home. But because the blower uses electricity to operate and vent the exhaust gasses, you need a power outlet close to the tank water heater to connect the blower fan.

Advantages of the power vent type of water heater is they use more of the exhaust heat to heat water so they are more efficient and the lower temperature of the exhaust gasses make it possible to use PVC piping rather than metal piping in atmospheric vent types, reducing installation costs.

Power Direct Vent

Water heaters with power direct vents are sometimes required when you plan to install your tank water heater in a space with insufficient air and ventilation for the combustion. Like power vent type of water heaters, power direct vent water heaters come with a blower. The blower not only pushes the exhaust gasses out of the house, it also draws fresh air using an intake pipe into the water heater used for combustion. This type of storage water heater also can use PVC piping which reduces the installation costs.

Direct Vent

Electrical water heaters are one of the most affordable options for tank water heaters coming with lower up-front costs. Unlike gas water heaters, they are not using combustion to heat water and for this reason they don’t need vent installation for exhaust gasses, reducing their installation time and costs, and increasing their efficiency.

It’s important to know that higher efficiency does not always translate to lower energy bills. While it’s true that electric tank water heaters are more efficient than gas-fueled water heaters. You might want to consider the cost of both types of fuel for generating the hot water you need for your house.

Another important factor to consider when buying a new electric tank water heater is to make sure your home has an electric setup to support the new water heater. For some houses, installation of a new electrical water heater requires an electric service upgrade which is a cost to consider.

Electrical Water Heaters

Electrical water heaters are one of the most affordable options for tank water heaters coming with lower up-front costs. Unlike gas water heaters, they are not using combustion to heat water and for this reason they don’t need vent installation for exhaust gasses, reducing their installation time and costs, and increasing their efficiency.

Hybrid Storage Tank Water Heaters

Hybrid (heat pump/electric) water heaters, also called heat pump water heaters, are one of the most efficient types of storage tank water heaters available in the market. These days high performance heat pumps are finding their ways into more homes in Canada as the low-temperature performance of heat pumps are improving.

A heat pump tank water heater, taking heat from the surrounding area where it’s installed (for example basement) and transferring the heat to the tank of water using a process called refrigeration cycle. While a conventional electric resistance water heater uses 100% of the energy to generate hot water, a heat pump hot water heater can transfer as much as 250% of the energy it uses to generate heat.
